5th October 2020 - Meet the Trainer! – Pete Lane

Pete Lane

At Catch Up®, we have a fantastic team of Accredited Trainers, and Pete Lane has been a member of this team since 2019, delivering training for Catch Up® Numeracy.

Before working for Catch Up®, Pete enjoyed a varied and very successful career. He trained as a civil engineer and worked on all aspects of infrastructure from roads and bridges to pipelines and rivers! He even designed parts of a new superstore in Thetford during the 1980’s – little knowing that years later he would be connected to the area again through Catch Up®! His work also took him to Central Africa as a water engineer, which inspired him to return to the continent in later years on charity projects. Pete told us, “It was then I realised the value of education, when I saw children of families I worked with walking up to 5 miles to get to school.”

This led Pete into a career in education, and he moved to teaching in 2001. He began this new journey as a secondary school maths teacher, later moving into leadership roles, including working as a SENCO. He also was very pleased to work as a National Strategies Consultant for Mathematics in South Yorkshire. Pete said, “This was a fantastic opportunity to support teachers and teaching assistants in a wide range of schools and settings, with a focus on developing mathematical understanding and an enjoyment of investigation.” He also reflected on his time as a SENCO: “My experience, and link for Looked After Children, provided much insight into the needs and backgrounds of struggling learners and definitely influenced my own teaching and learning practice.” Pete’s work across all these avenues gave him the invaluable experience of teaching children from age 7 to 18!

After his very successful time working in schools and for Local Authorities, Pete then became an independent education consultant, specialising in maths and curriculum support. This work was interesting and varied – and very importantly for us, led him to Catch Up®! We were really pleased to welcome Pete aboard and gain from his vast experience and knowledge. He told us, “I have found joining Catch Up® to be a unique opportunity to bring together my passion and love for numeracy with my desire to help all children grow in their learning, especially those who struggle for a variety of reasons. I always look forward to the training sessions I deliver, working with attendees so they return to school enthused and refreshed, with a desire to implement Catch Up® Numeracy as soon as possible!”

When Pete is not delivering Catch Up® training, he enjoys ‘treading the boards’, as he is involved with amateur theatre. He has relished putting on large musical productions, utilising his own musical background quite often as musical director! He has also enjoyed many outdoor pursuits. “Always up for a challenge, I have previously learned to fly and held a private pilot’s licence for a number of years, as well as gaining my open water diving certificate. I have only recently set aside my helmet and leathers and said ‘goodbye’ to my last motorbike too!”

Pete is based in South Yorkshire, but is originally from Liverpool. He thoroughly enjoys delivering the Catch Up® training courses, both face-to-face (earlier in the year!) and online. The feedback we have had from trainees is very positive, and Pete has been so pleased to be part of making a difference. He enjoys sharing the ‘lightbulb moments’ and has a top tip for all Catch Up® trainees – “It works…so don’t try to fix it!” We’re so pleased to have Pete as part of our amazing team of trainers.
