Find out moreOne pupil entered Year 3 with a reputation for being very disruptive and workshy in the Foundation Phase. He was inquisitive and interested in topic-based work, but had difficulty accessing the curriculum due to his poor reading skills.
When tested in September 2011 using the Salford Reading Test, his Reading Age was found to be 5 years 11 months - 25 months behind his Chronological Age. He was selected for the Catch Up Literacy intervention, and thrived on the one-to-one sessions, gaining the confidence to become more involved in class.
He quickly worked through the Catch Up Literacy levels, from level 6 to level 9 in 22 sessions. His attitude to learning improved and this had a positive impact on his general behaviour both in the classroom and in the playground.
When tested using the Salford Reading Test in February 2012, his Reading Age was 10 years - 19 months ahead of his Chronological Age. This represented a Reading Age gain of 49 months in just 5 months!
He continues to enjoy reading in Year 4.
